poster: high-rise building friedrichstraße by ludwig mies van der rohe
architectura draft by ludwig mies van der rohe 1922
format din a1 (84,1 x 59,4 cm)
paper 170 g/m²
ludwig mies van der rohe presented the ideal high-rise building in 1922: the floor plan like a three-pointed star, the outer skin made entirely of glass, three elevators at its core. the inner surface seems unplanned. this high-rise was not feasible at the time.
in the draft, an over-subscribed photo, mies van der rohe emphasizes the contrast between the glass transparency and lightness of his high-rise building - and the heavy weight of berlin's old buildings, which have been incrementally darkened in the photo.
the design depicted on the poster was created for the ideas competition for a high-rise building at friedrichstraße station in berlin. the location was to be the property between the train station, the spree and friedrichstraße.
the exaggerated photo is in the collection of the bauhaus archive in berlin.
