hans kessler's letters to his mother are among the few surviving documents relating to the last two years of the bauhaus. with their remarks on political events and the everyday life of the bauhaus member, they are culturally and historically significant primary sources. in april 1933, the bauhaus building in berlin was surrounded, searched and sealed by the police and sa. several students were temporarily detained. in july 1933, the last bauhaus director, ludwig mies van der rohe, together with the teachers who remained in berlin, decided to dissolve the bauhaus itself in order to prevent political conformity.
"hans kessler. the last two years of the bauhaus. letters from a bauhaus member to his mother" is the second volume of the bauhaus archive's publication series, which began in 2012.
