bauhaus poster: joost schmidt – bauhaus exhibition 1923

the poster for the bauhaus exhibition in 1923 is a bauhaus icon - and certainly the best-known bauhaus graphic.

the graphic artist joost schmidt took the stylized head out of the bauhaus signet, which oskar schlemmer had designed. he inserted it into a composition of geometric shapes and appropriately designed characters. the graphics seem to be playfully thrown along, the tilt to the left makes the figure float on the surface. all in all, joost schmidt's design achieves a very harmonious form.

oskar schlemmer created comparable compositions with his reliefs from these years.

there are two of these posters in the collection of the bauhaus archive berlin. one of them has an additional sticker with changed exhibition dates: "opening postponed to aug 15 - sept 30".

the original poster has the format 60.5 x 48 cm, the motif has been enlarged for printing.
